In the 1st Test of their four-match series, India defeat Australia by an inning and 132 runs, which took three days.
Ravichandran Ashwin, a spinner, took 5-37 as the tourists were bowled out for 91 in their second test in Nagpur. They had to get 223 runs to make India bat again, but they only got 91.
Steve Smith was still alive on 25 as wickets fell all around him for Australia.
India started the day with 321 runs and 7 wickets, but they were all out for 400 in the end. Australian spinner Todd Murphy, who was making his debut, took two more wickets to end with 7-124.
Australia’s previous lowest Scoring total in India was 93, achieved in a 13-run loss in Bombay in 2004.
Australia’s second innings quickly went downhill after the opener, Usman Khawaja was captured by Virat Kohli for 5 off Ashwin in the second over.
Ravindra Jadeja caught Marnus Labuschagne lbw for 17 in the 11th over, and David Warner created it to 10 before he was caught the same way by Ashwin. This left Australia with a score of 34-3.
The tourists’ innings were over in just under two hours. They lost their last seven wickets for 57 runs.
Ashwin finished the match with 8 wickets and 79 runs out. This was the 31st time in 89 Tests that he had taken five wickets.
Slow left-arm Jadeja took 2-34 in the second innings. He later admitted to breaking the (ICC) conduct code during Australia’s 1st innings and was fined 25% of his match fee and given one demerit point.
The 34-year-old was given a penalty because he put a soothing cream on the swollen finger on his bowling hand without asking the on-field umpires first.
“The match referee was pleased that the cream was only put on the finger for medical reasons,” an ICC statement said.
“The cream wasn’t put on the ball as an artificial substance, so it didn’t change the ball’s condition.”
Australia and India are the top two teams in the rankings and standings for the World Test Championship. India needs to win by at least 3-1 to make sure they make it to the final.
The team led by Cummins is currently at the top of the standings. They only need to tie one of the 4 Tests to make sure of their spot.
Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, said, “When playing a series like this, it’s vital to get off to a good start. I’m glad I was able to play well enough to help the team.”
On Friday, February 17, the second Test will start in New Delhi.
