Musk, CEO of electric car manufacturer Tesla, claims he gave away about $1.95 billion (£1.6 billion) in shares to charity in 2017.
US officials were assured that the 11.6 million shares were “a bona fide gift” in a filing.
Donation beneficiaries were not identified in the application.
On the same day, Twitter CEO Elon Musk remarked that the end of the year would be an “excellent time” to pick his successor.
The filing with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission indicated the contribution was made between September and December of last year.
The BBC attempted to contact Tesla for comment, but the company did not immediately respond.
This is not Musk’s first time donating Tesla shares to a good cause. According to the document, he gave out almost $5.74 billion in shares in 2021.
In the same year, he tweeted his intention to provide $20 million to Cameron County schools and $10 million to Brownsville, Texas, for “downtown revitalization.”

Mr. Musk has reportedly alluded to his intention to identify a replacement as CEO of Twitter by the end of 2023, and the number of employees suing the company ‘goes growing every day.
According to him, the company should be in a secure position by the end of the year. “I’m estimating maybe towards the end of this year would be an ideal time to find someone else to lead the company,” he added.
On a video link at the World Government Summit in Dubai, he stated, “I think I need to establish the organization and just ensure it’s in a financially sound place and that the product plan is clearly laid out.”
Last year, the social media site was purchased by a multibillionaire businessman for $44 billion. He later revealed the company was on the brink of collapse.
But some Tesla investors have said he’s diverting too much of his attention from the company to attempt to fix Twitter.
Mr. Musk complained about his workload while representing Twitter, Tesla, and SpaceX at the G20 Meeting in Bali, Indonesia last November.
The amount of work I have to do has increased significantly, Mr. Musk remarked. Certainly, he said, “I have too much work on my plate.”
